Restaurant Review- Mama’s House- Santorini, Greece
Visiting Santorini and want a good, authentic home cooked Greek meal on the cheap? Mama’s house is the place. Located in the center of Fira next to the bus stop, you will find a grand welcome from Mama herself and a family affair to host your culinary visit.
They use all local fresh produce with virgin olive oil. You can sample the Santorini favorites of cherry tomatoes, white eggplant (in the Summer months), fava beans and capers all included somewhere on the menu. The prices are almost unbelievable. Santorini restaurants are expensive and eating out every day will threaten to bust your budget. Mama’s House solves that problem with good quality food, very generous portions (you could make a meal out of the appetizers alone) a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere all for shockingly affordable prices. Excellent value for the money spent.
Here are some of the favorites I pulled from the appetizer menu:
Santorini fava with capers and onion – 4 euro
Eggplant rolls “Mama Mia” stuffed with feta cheese (house favorite and mine!)- 5 euro
Vine leaves stuffed with egg and lemon sauce (seasonal- out of season substitute cabbage for vine leaves)- 5 euro
Fennel pie from Crete- 5 euro
Mussels “Saganaki” in tomato and wine sauce with feta- 7 euro (unheard of price for a “Saganaki”)
Grilled octopus with balsamic- 8 euro (unheard of price for a generous portion of octopus)
Santorini zucchini fried in light batter- 5 euro
White Santorini eggplant fried in light batter (seasonal)- 5 euro
Santorini tomato balls- 5 euro
Casserole specialities:
Mama’s Pastitsio- 8 euro
Moussakas with white eggplant- 8 euro
Entrees:
Mama’s spaghetti with eggplant and olives- 8 euro
Seafood spaghetti with tomato sauce- 14 euro
Grilled fish of the day- 15 euro
And if you order something you don’t like when Mama’s around, be forewarned, she will notify the chef! But if you’re lucky, you may be forced to choose a replacement of 3 fresh dishes all brought out to your table for you to decide. It doesn’t get any better than that!
